The newest AAUW material is about success stories, copiing strategies for middle school girls. I have to talk about it and host a panel fo the local board of ed. on Feb. 22. There is a video as well, put out by AAUW, called GIRLS IN THE MIDDLE: working to succeed in school. Karen Perry A.J. They should be able to give you lots of information. They have a web site, http://www.aauw.org There is an article in the Feb. issue of Technology connection about girls and technology that also might be of interest to you. Hope this helps. Carol Ebel Library Media Specialist (And AAUW member!) Parkside School Fond du Lac, WI re: fighting gender bias You might try to get in touch with our Illinois magnet high school for the sciences and math (Illinois Math and Science Academy or IMSA) which has been pioneering calculus for girls only and other innovative classes. Part of the IMSA mandate is to share their findings, so they're always friendly and helpful to inquirers and visitors. Hope this will help a little. Ruth Jacobsen Lauren--I am a full-time elementary media specialist at 3 K-5 schools. In my free time (ha) I am working on an MLS in library and information management. Last summer in one of my classes I had to do an annotated bibliography on the subject"brain and gender." I ran across a lot of good books and even some videos which might be useful to you. You didn't mention a date for your inservice so get in touch with me (let me know any particular angles you are interested in.) I'll be glad to help if I can. I may also post this to LM_NET. In the class I'm taking now we're supposed to contribute to the listserve. Seventeen magazine , Jan. 1995 had an article titled Girls with ADD. There are many references now in ADD materials showing a difference in the way boys and girls are affected. Girls usually do not have the hyperactive component as often. Good luck. If you cannot find the Seventeen article I will be happy to fax it to you. From: Marcia Millere, stonycrk@rose.net To: oaklane@POND.COM Lauren, Try contacting the local branch of American Association of University Women. Their big cause is education for girls and women and eradicating gender bias in schools. They did a presentation at my school: showed a video, gave talk, distributed literature. Warning: lots of talk about gender bias in schools tends to put teachers on the defensive! The way they package the idea could step on some toes, but I think the info is good.
