REF: British hero

One of our students is trying to find information about a British
soldier who threw himself on a bomb thrown by the IRA in order to save
Irish lives.  This incident supposedly took place in the 1950's, 60's
or 70's.  I realize this is sketchy info, but if anyone can direct us
to some information, it would be greatly appreciated.
