ELEM: reference books recommendations

I have been asked to select about $1,000. worth of hardbound reference books for
a school media center that serves grades 3,4,5. (memorial money with those
specifications) I am not at all familiar with the collection but need to give
them a list from which to choose. I have some print resources to use to help me
but would like to know if anyone has some fairly recent reference books that
they especially like. Thanks.
