Thanks!! Cindy Brown District Librarian Jackson Street School Library 405 Jackson Street Yreka, Ca 96097 Cindy Brown, librarian, Jackson Street School From: Marguerite L Cheman <cheman@ACSU.BUFFALO.EDU> Subject: Re: librarian burnout Many, many thanks to all who responded to my burnout survey. Many of you requested the results of the survey, so I will briefly summarize for the list. Preliminary results indicate approximately 75% of respondants do not have a management that recognize librarian burnout! From the "yes" respondants, the following are some of the offered solutions: -An expectation of and time for professional development -Adequate or additional training, particularly with new technologies -Open lines of communication/supportive administration -Rotating assignments and flexible scheduling/reference scheduling -Recognition (verbal & written) for special projects or work well done -Participative management allowing professional control over own work environment On an individual level, one can employ the usual methods to relieve stress: exercise, diet, vacations, counseling, etc. The truly burntout individual, though, rarely recognizes this condition in himself, and can be a serious detriment to an organiation. The key is to deal with a potential problem before it occurs. Again, thanks for your help. If anyone wants more detailed info, e-mail me directly. Marguerite Cheman cheman@acsu.buffalo.edu
