As a library aide I was given a book on cataloging and told to teach myself -- I did what I now call preliminary cataloging, the librarian would choose the Dewey number and check over the subject headings that I had choosen. I took my first cataloging course in 1971. I could have opted to test out of the next cataloging course that I needed to take -- I didn't. I enjoy cataloging, and I do quite a bit of original cataloging. Someone mentioned teaching students -- in my last school I gave students a form and they filled in the basics for me -- author, title, publisher, page numbers, etc. I then did the Dewey number and the subject headings and typed the cards (no computer). I still do a preliminary work sheet for my books, I believe that it is best to get the books on the shelves even if the book isn't in the card catalog (we will be automating next year, I hope), if the student is looking for a book on a particular subject the cards that are in the card catalog will get the student to the right place in the library, and they will see all the books on that subject. Maybe not the best way to do things, but for me it works. Emily Jean Honaker, Media Specialist EMILY_H@TRECA.OHIO.GOV Delaware JVS The Area Career Center 1610 St. Rt. 521, Delaware, Ohio 43015-9001
