Group -- A friend just sent me some information on "fair use of copyrighted digital materials." It says: "Up to 10%, but no more than 30 seconds of a musical work" So does that mean if a song by Nine-Inch Nails is 3 minutes and 26 seconds, (206 seconds) this means that a student can use ONLY 20.6 seconds of the song on a multimeda work because that is "up to 10%" of the selection? In effect, the rule is any music selection under 5 minutes (300 seconds) the part you can use will be less than 30 seconds (10% of the 300 seconds)? Am I being anal retentive about this? My colleage doesn't read it that way and feels you can use up to 30 seconds as a minimum. Inquiring minds want to know.
