I had a similar experience with Ngaio Marsh.  She's a wonderful mystery
writer from New Zealand who, along with Sayers, invented the genleman
detective.  If you've seen the PBS adaptations ignore them.  Great liberties
have been taken witht the books.

Marjorie Allingham was also a great English mystery writer.
