Ginny's suggestion about coordinating summer reading with the public library summer reading programs is a good idea. I have heard of schools giving credit for books read in the summer through these programs. Do any of you do this? What kinds of recognition or credit do you give? Do you give grades in the upper grades? What about new students in the fall who didn't know about the program? This might be an area to encourage cooperation between school and public librarians. However, the public librarians that I have had contact with here in Birmingham have always been extremely helpful and cooperative. Someone else commented that she didn't know that someone didn't like her. I feel the same. If there is a problem or a "versus" (as someone put it), then it has certainly been concealed from me.
