I allow Kindergartners to borrow up to 3 books if they don't have=
any overdues. First and second graders may borrow up to 4 books and one=
video tape or stuffed animal/book/cassette kit. If there are overdues they=
may only borrow one or two books to be kept in their classroom until the=
 others are returned.

We limit all kids to no more than 2 each visit (3 before holiday breaks
and in special circumstances). However, they do not need to return all
of their books before they take out new ones. They may have up to 10
books out a time. If they have more than three overdue books (4 week
borrowing) however, they may not borrow any more until they have
returned the late books.
Hope this helps.

I limit my middle schoolers (6-8) to 4 books. I charge overdue fines, and
if they have so many checked out, the fines mount up before they realize
it!

My 1st and 2nd graders now check out 2. When I'm pushed to give an
answer to students in the other grades, I respond "How many do you
need?" If they have good reason, and there aren't a bunch of other
students looking for the same books, they can have a "reasonable"
amount: that is, a "realistic" amount for the purpose at hand. But
    normally, no more than 5.

All kids in my building (K-5) check out one book during scheduled library
time each week. They can return to get a new one at their teacher's
convenience.

I have a K-6 school and have the same limits as you, except that 4-6 have
the same limit of 3 books each. With no paid help and only occasional
volunteer help and a school population of almost 500 students, I don't
think i can handle a much larger circulation.

My current limits are the same as yours and I have found that
they work well. I would hesitate to raise my limits, because as
it is my older kids often check out 3 titles and do not have time
to look at all of them.

I also limit the number of books checked out by some classes.

                K - 1 book
                1 and 2 - 2 books
                3rd - 3 books
4,5 and 6 - a number within reason, most kids will still
only check out three or four, others I may suggest they cut back. I had
to limit this year's fourth grade to six books. They were getting way out
of hand.

I'll be interested in seeing what others do.

K gets 1 book at a time, no magazines until Springtime; K's who can read,
and with teacher and parent permission can check out 2.
Grade 1 gets two at a time, (only 1 mag at a time), no mags circulate
until November.

grades 2-4 get two at a time, except fourth graders who have a
teacher-assigned project may take out a third book for their project.
One magazine per child at a time, as well as 1 Goosebumps book per child.

I've already got 2 kindergartners who've lost one and two books, and
whose parents have told me, "Do not let my child borrow any more".

K - 1 book (may go to 2 toward the end of the school year
1-6 - 2 books with additional allowed as needed for projects or reports

I let the Ks check out 1, the 2s 2, and the 3s through 5s 3
each. I've been thinking of upping the numbers, too, but worry
about losses.

We have about the same limits as you do, currently. However, I might as
well not have any limits because I am constantly making exceptions (I never
want kids to leave without a book or two)! I especially make exceptions for
children I know are responsible about returning their books, and who read a
lot. Otherwise, those limits are necessary so that too many books don't get
lost between the library, the classroom, after school care, home and back
again. I let parents check out a bunch of books if they come in after
school, because I know the books will make it home and back. Plus, we are a
private school, so I know that our kids have a lot of books at home
already, and if they want more library books, they can either come in with
their parents or go to the public library.

It seems simple for the kids to remember and understand the limits we
use: 1st grade--1; 2nd grade--2; 3rd grade--3; 4th grade 4. If I had
5th and 6th I would probably give 5 and 6 a try. But somehow I think 4
would be a reasonable number for them too. I think 7-12 should have
unlimited amount--unless even one book is late.

K-2: 1 book
3-5: 2 books

We tell our kids one for fun and what you need for assignments. We have
unofficially moved to two for fun as long as individual keeps up with
overdues and lost materials. We limit holiday and special interest
collections to one at a time. This way we don't limit access for
assignments only recreational items. And like you they have daily access.

Ellen

Yapha, I am in a Grade 1-5 school, and my limits are the same as yours. I
can't imagine how kids would keep track of even more books! Judi

*********************************************************************

Your limits on book checkouts are very similar to mine:
K-1=one book
2-6=two books and one magazine.
Students may come in at any time, return what they have checked out,
and check out different materials.
The main reason that I limit checkout is that I am not automated, so
when a class of more than twenty students comes into the library all at
once, I have to really scramble to check everything in manually, find the
kids who didn't return their materials, set up the kids who are using the
mini computer lab, help kids find books--all in thirty minutes. If the
kids checked out more materials I simply couln't check them all in and
have time to do any reader guidance at all. And reader guidance is my
favorite part of the job.
Sincerely,
Shirley Ellis
