Dear LM_Netters: I have a different question than any that have been broached on this subject. We have had a successful mandatory K-12 summer reading program for the past 5 years, with the elementary schools providing lists of authors, our 7-8 school allowing any appropriate authors, and the high school a more specific thematic list of books. Each student must read a minimum of two books. We have follow-up programs in September, including some written work (not much), reading logs, and a special presentation by either an author, illustrator, poet, story teller, etc. Now there is a movement to make one of the two books a specific title that all students at each grade level must read, with a more intense follow-up in September. Do any of you in public schools have any experience with this? Who provides the books? Who pays for the books? What happens to the reluctant reader? Our original purpose was to promote "pleasure" reading in the summer? What will happen to that concept? Please respond to me. If there are enough, I'll post a hit.
