Target: Lou Gehrig

Dear Friends:

It is widely assumed that Lou Gehrig died of "Lou Gehrig's Disease",
amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.  A colleague insists that, while Gehrig did
suffer from this disease, it was NOT the cause of his death.

Standard reference sources do not seem to address the question.  Can anyone
tell me the exact cause of Lou Gehrig's death, or is my colleague simply
wrong?  Would also appreciate a source of the information.
