TECH: Netscape - Handy URL keystroke hints

Once I saw the helpful bookmark hints offered by Donna Baumbach for
Netscape, I decided that it would be a good idea to let everyone know how
to save needless keystrokes on Web browsers when typing URLs.  I'm sure
some of you already know this, but I always come across people who don't.
OK, let's start.

1)  You never have to type "http://" for a web URL again.  Netscape
    and Explorer assume that part (maybe something like Netscape 1.1 would
    not).  For example, to get to the University of Illinois web site,
    just type "www.uiuc.edu".

2)  On NETSCAPE (and ONLY on Netscape) you do not need to type in the
    entire domain name if it is a ".com" URL.  For example, to get to the
    CNN Interactive site, don't bother typing "http://www.cnn.com" or even
    "www.cnn.com".

    Simply type "cnn" and press return (or enter).

3)  When you highlight a URL line to type in a URL, don't bother hitting
    the backspace button (or delete button) before proceeding to type in
    the URL.  Once the line is highlighted, all you need to do is begin
    typing the URL since it will automatically erase and overwrite as soon
    as you hit the first key.

4) You do not need to bookmark all of the main search engines since they
   are on the C|NET Express Search site (http://www.search.com).  This
   site has a nice scrollable list of the major search engines as well as
   some other handy features.

   Of course, all you need to do to get there is highlight and type
   "search" (on Netscape, that is).

Just thought all of the busy librarians in our world should know this.
