TLA Preconference
Tuesday, April 8, 1997
Ft. Worth, TX

Co-sponsored by Children's Round Table; Texas Association of School Librarians;
Texas State Library; Young Adult Round Table; and TLA Public Relations
Committee

Reaching young readers-and their parents-in an environment filled with
competing and contradictory messages is one of the major challenges for
modern library service. Participants in this beginner's preconference
will sharpen their public relations and marketing skills, learn how to
build community and institutional support for youth programs, and focus
on creating effective partnerships. The presenters, representing a team of
Oklahoma academic, public, and school libraries have succeeded with
coordinated public relations and marketing strategies.

Participants will learn:
* why they should invest time, funds, and energy in public relations;
* how to develop a public relations plan for school and public libraries;
* to identify local opinion makers, decision makers, and audiences and to
develop partnerships with these groups;
* how to market youth services; and
* how to evaluate your public relations program.
