ID's with barcodes

Our School Photo company is promoting id's with photo and bar code on the
back.  We are automated and use a rolodex with student pictures (added by
hand-very time consuming) and a barcode which is theirs from 6th grade to
12th.  The school provides an ID for the students if their pictures are
taken in the fall, but does not require it for dances, games, etc..

Do any of you who use a library barcode on the ID have any words of wisdom?
Do you use a unique library number or the ID number from the student's
record in the office?  Has anyone tried this and it didn't work?  I invite
your comments and suggestions. TIA
