Forward from Patricia D. A private business must cater to the needs and wants of its public. Without local librarians directly involved in selecting books and materials, a crucial facet of the librarian's responsibilities is taken away. As a school librarian, I have always counted on the public librarians to take the lead in book selection. When we were all being serviced by the same processing center, I valued the importance of the booklists that the public librarians created for our use. With few selection tools at our dispposal, I considered these lists invaluable tools to find out what new titles are available for us. I sincerely hope that changes can be made to the contract that involves local selection again. The politicians need to know that Hawaii's reputation is on the line. Bart Kane sounds as intransigent as ever. Baker & Taylor can be faulted for poor selection, but Kane (and the Board of Education) are responsible for a terrible contract.
