Character and Values Development

I am compiling a bibliography of upper elementary/middle school books that
can be used in discussing character and values.  An example would be "The
Giver" by Lois Lowery.  What book or books would you recommend?
 Controversial books are welcome.  The bibliography will be used for teacher
in-services and I will discuss the merits of books that have been challenged.
