RE: B&T Outsourcing
The flip side to receiving duplicate copies of titles already in HSPLS
is the inadequate number of copies Hawaii Libraries are receiving of
adult bestsellers.

EX. Most libraries received only one(1) copy of Sue Grafton's
"M is for Malice" and Scott Turow's "Laws of Our Father".

Ex. A regional library on Oahu did not receive any copies of
         Walter Cronkite's "A Reporter's Life" or "My Sergei: A
Love Story" by Ekaterina Gordeeva, #1 and #2 on PW's
         Bestseller List - Non-fiction.

Ex. There are 448 reserves on "Deep end of the Ocean" by
Jacquelyn Mitchard, with 64 copies in HSPLS. Baker
and Taylor have indicated they will not re-order a title after
        the initial shipment.

Is Baker & Taylor responsive to the needs/interests of Hawaii's Library
users? I think NOT!

* Ask Bart Kane to explain how the profiles Hawaii's libraries submitted
to B&T in April 1996 are reflected in the titles/copies being shipped.

To make it appear HSPLS librarians have some say in the selection
(now it's called co-sourcing, not outsourcing), a Selection Advisory
Committee of two branch librarians
= Diane Eddy of Reengineering
= Caroline Spencer of HSL (main downtown Honolulu library)
was formed. By any performance measure, it is impotent.

EX. A regional library on Oahu has submitted over 40 titles for
purchase consideration, received from it's public in the last two
months. To date, NO response has been received from the committee,
and none of the titles have been ordered by B&T.

EX. HSPLS libraries still do not have a Standing Order List of
reference books Baker and Taylor will be ordering - this after
6 months of input and revisions.

* Have Bart Kane identify EXACTLY who worked on/drafted/wrote
the outsourcing contract awarded to B&T.

* Ask Bart Kane to explain how HIS decision to outsource fits in
with the Self-Directed Work Team concept he has touted for HSPLS.
