The following came in from Deborah Gutermuth from
the Kaneohe Public Library. It is another example of
what is being said on the internal library e-mail.
And FYI, in case you are wondering, all libraries are supposed
to call themselves "Team -------" In this case, Team Bond which
refers to Bond Memorial Public Library which is located on the
Big Island aka Island of Hawaii (island where the active
volcanoes are).

Laurel-
I'm entering the e-mail sent to all from Bond Memorial Library on the Big
Island. One more time, it proves we are getting "second" or "third" best
from Baker&Taylor. I, for one, have had great success with them as a
VENDOR. Their "selection section" is @#$!!!. Since ALL our budget for
new books is in Baker&Taylor's hands--is it any wonder all of us are out
grubbing and begging for handouts? This also plays havoc with Bart's
premise of "Service First" -- the supposed savings from putting all CPC
and CSS personnel back in the Libraries is taken up with trying to find
funds not given to B&T, and repairing the flaws in Cataloging and
processing from B&T.

Subj: interesting coincidence?

With a grant from Friends of the Library, Hawaii, Team Bond is preparing
orders for books and video tapes. The interesting coincidence is that, in
deciding to spread our funds as far as we can stretch them, we have been
making selections from those frequently received discount catalogs from
Publishers Quality Library Service and University Books Service. And of
course, most of our selections must be items in the HSPLS database.
While checking the titles we'd selected against the database holdings
we discovered that almost every title was recently received as"NEW" or
"IN PROCESSING", meaning that they are the same titles being shipped
by B&T. Here is a brief list of some of the selections and their prices:

            Title List$ Disc.$
           B & T
B&T
Dreamland by Schotter 15.95 11.17 20.94
Cousins in the Castle 15.95 10.50 20.94
The 13th Floor 15.00 10.50 20.94
Black Holes by Cooper 16.95 11.87 20.94
Spider who Created... 15.95 11.17 20.94
Northwoods Cradle Song 15.00 10.50 20.94
The Precious Gift 16.00 11.20 20.94
Irish Cinderlad 14.95 10.47 20.94
The Last Man and ... 15.95 11.17 20.94
etc.

Bond will be ordering these titles at the discount price.
Our Team is happy to be ordering at nearly 50% discount what
HSPLS is receiving under contract at $20.94 each. Thanks to
FOL for a grant that allows us to strengthen our collection at such
bargain prices. If the catalogues offer the public these discounts,
just think what discount B&T gets. It's enough to make you cry!
And obviously, these are items no longer considered "NEW"
though B&T is labeling them so.

Subj:More interesting coincidence

Lest you wonder about the shipping costs of items purchased
from university Book Service, their order blank reads: "free shipping
for prepaid school and library orders." So all we add is Hawaii State
Tax. Processing? We do that while doing Reference...being available
to our patrons!

Now, if we could just get online to download our own Marc records ...
we could order NEW books too!

Cheers,
Team Bond
