I am posting Michael Golrick's post, below, at this time because at least
some of you will be attending the ALA Mid-Winter Meetings in
Washington, D.C. or will know someone else who is going. Mr.
Golrick makes a generous offer to the many of us who have been
discussing the total outsourcing of selections and cataloging in Hawaii
for many months.

>>If you decide that there is a specific, appropriate action which you
>>wish to have ALA Council take, please contact me.

So, let me ask you to draft some input regarding an action resolution
which the Hawaii Working Group might present at the MidWinter
meetings to the ALA Council. Send all input to me as Chair of the
Hawaii Working Group. (denwall@aol.com/Patricia Wallace) and send
a copy to Mr. Golrick (mgolrick@sclc.org). Thank you!

I just read PUBLIB 987 which included your list of Hawaii contacts.
I took the time to look up the web page you cited for the statement by
Pat Matsumoto at the HLA Conference.

[[Pat Matsumoto, Librarian at Hawaii State Library--Language,
Literature, and History Division--maintains a Web Page with her
testimony before the Hawaii Library Association (State ALA Chapter)
on Oct. 19, 1996, and links to other testimony by Sylvia Mitchell and
Sarah Preble at:
< http://www.hcc.hawaii.edu/hspls/pmatsumoto.html >]]

I found it quite interesting and would encourage others to look at it.

Let me just add, that as an ALA Councilor I am pleased that you have
found a forum for further discussion of this issue. As I have said to
others, this is an important issue for the profession. If you decide that
there is a specific, appropriate action which you wish to have ALA
Council take, please contact me.

Sincerely,

Michael A. Golrick mgolrick@sclc.org
