Hello Group, a couple of our math teachers attended this workshop last
summer and said it was *very* good. They were really excited about
adding hands-on activities to their repertoire. I'm not associated with
the consortium, but I thought some of you might be interested for your
teachers. I'm looking for activities that will tie math to other
departments -- literature, history, etc.

Subject: Manipulative & Lab workshop

Several years ago, the Panhandle Tech Prep Consortium using Carl Perkins
money funded the writing of Academic Technical Algebra. With teachers
from 6 different high schools a curriculum was started using the methods
of labs, manipulatives, games, and inexpensive alternate methods to
lecture and worksheets. This material is being used as a complete stand
alone curriculum in some schools and as a supplement in others.

Annually, Dale Matteson and I do several workshops illustrating these
methods and I have been requested to post the times and locations. These
two day workshops are funded by the local Tech Prep Consortium and are
free to participating schools. While the core of the workshop is aimed
at Algebra I and TAAS remediation, material can be geared higher or lower
depending upon the teacher's assignment. There are breakout sessions as
needed to address the needs of the actual participants.

The Gulf Coast Tech Prep Consortium is sponsoring workshops in Pasedena
March 11 and 12, City of Houston Metropolitan Multi-Service Center April
15 and 16, and Spring Branch May 7 and 8. To register or for more
information contact Lillian Walker at 409-532-6517 or the Tech Prep
office at 713-591-9310.

The North Texas Tech Prep Consortium is also sponsoring a workshop in
Wichita Falls June 12 and 13. Those in that area should contact Romona
Vaughn at 817-696-8752 ext 249.

I questioned whether to post this, but as the workshops are free to the
schools and participating teachers I wanted to help get the word out.
For additional information, e-mail me , but please register and get that
type of information from the TP concortium.
