Dear all--I just had to weigh in with my humble opinion....I think this is a very valid topic for this list and I agree with Betty and Mark. We use LCSH at our school. I feel that is far more valid to have uniformity across the country even though I don't always agree with LC. (Where do they get those esoteric terms sometimes? thank goodness for key word searching) I just explain to the students (LCSH is a part of our Junior portion of library skills) that LC doesn't necessarily use what we might think of as a subject heading, but that they need to learn how to use them as we are a college prep school and they will probably encounter them in their college system; and yes, I have had to defend their use to an angry parent who wanted me to use "his" term.... -- Lois Roberts Bishop O'Dowd HS Library, Oakland, Ca lrobert@odowd.pvt.k12.ca.us
