TARGET:SEC: Low-level reading alternate for To Kill A Mockingbird

HELP!  Our special education teacher is looking for an alternate for To
Kill A Mockingbird for Low-level reading students.  She said it needed to
be either a similar themed story or at least taking place during the same
time period.  I would appreciate any ideas or info. of what other schools
use for an alternate.
