Dear Kathleen, I liked Eve Bunting's Going Home, illustrated by David Diaz. It would be interesting to see the pair win a second Caldecott together. I also liked Kevin Henkes's Lily's Purple Plastic Purse but somehow it doesn't seem quite what the Caldecott Committee looks for. However I feel it should win a special award for making the reader feel good after reading it. Also there was Big and Little by Jenkins, an interesting animal-size, information book. Im home so I don't have my books at hand or I could probably think of others. This seemed to be a really good year for picture books, by which I mean a lot I liked; likewise for Newbery possibilities. (I really think Katherine Paterson will win for Jip). Do let us know what other suggestions you get. It won't be too long now til the awards are announced. Even when I don't agree I like to see what is chosen. Janet Rawdon Newton MA rawdon@meol.mass.edu
