Dear Laurel, I just added the listserv to my computer yesterday so, I am a newbie to this marvelous technology! I was reading my email when I came across your request. This is what I finished just before school was out for the summer: I had a volunteer look through past and out dated product catalogs for illustrations of characters and pictures of book covers which would help identify the subject area for all readers, but especially for the primary level of students. I do not have an assistant with me when classes are checking out materials. I found it real frustrating for students to locate where the "snake" books are in the library through the use of the proximity of a fellow student... By finding a picture of a snake, hopefully the quest will be conquered! (OOPS,sidetrack...) I next chose bright colored railroad board and cut it large enough to stick out of the shelf about 3 inches and shorter than the shelf by about an inch. Both of the sides of the card then have both the Dewey Number and the illustrated information for the students to use to hone in on the information. The cards were laminated to make them more durable! So far the biggest problem is the students removing them by mistake. They assume they are markers someone forgot to return to the marker box! I hope this helps. :-) Debbie Connelly Elementary Library Media Specialist connellyd@mail.yamhillesd.k12.or.us
