RIF was in the school vocabulary a long time before Downsizing. It means Reduction In Force. Schools usually used it after having a budget defeated by the voters. They would release teachers starting from the bottom up. All first year teachers would go unless protected by job specialty, then 2nd year, 3rd year, etc. A particularly bad RIF could involve tenured teachers. Dan Robinson Editoral Specs Specialist H.W.
