A long story: I remember that when I was in fourth grade, I played librarian in my parents' "library," stamping date due slips and putting them in their books--think I got a stamp and stamp pad for Christmas that year. (I still find some of those slips in books I inherited from my parents, the slips being dated Jan 28 '48--now you knoow how old I am!!!) Anyway, time passed. Eighth grade I "worked" in our teeny little Jr. High library--a shelf or so full of fiction: Bonnie's Boy (my favorite book then), lots of Betty Cavanna and Mary Stolz. Senior year, we took the Kuder Preference Test. My profile came out "Be an actress or a librarian." I chose neither at that point. Undergraduate: English major in secondary education, with a minor in library science (just in case I needed something to "fall back on.") Taught five years. Went back to school for a master's in English. Taught one more year. Married, taught another year and a half. Began our family, one daughter, one son, then adopted an Asian daughter and an Asian son. Spent a few years rearing children and occasionally substituting. Tried to get a teaching job--late 70s--no jobs to be had in English. The Library Director at the college where my husband teaches, remem- bering that I had a minor in LS, called to tell me about a small local art school that was looking for someone to manage their collection. I got the job; at the same time, this school was working on getting their certification as a 4-year degree-granting college. I took several graduate courses and was on the way to a second masters when our local high school advertised for a media specialist. I got the job in 1985 and am still there--and like most of you who responded to this posting, I LOVE IT!!! There, that's my story.
