It seems to me that what is required is a wideness of knowledge which can come from reading or education. This is needed if one is going to be good at reference or helping teachers with curriculum. I find this more frequently in staff with a subject bachelors degree and a MS in LS. The problem is in the courses the library science classes replace. I know this will not be a popular response.
