Thanks, Maureen for getting this interesting thread started.

I began teaching 4th grade with a degree in political science. In those
days, any degree, the ability to breathe and the willingness to pursue a
teaching certificate qualified you to teach in Brevard County, Florida. I
absolutely loved teaching....until the testing and documenting functions
were given priority over teaching kids. I grew tired of the children
asking, "Are we going to read a story today?" to which I was often forced
to reply, "No...we must learn about the schwa sound in unaccented syllables
first." (really!). And we had to take computerized county tests on these
gems of knowledge. But read we did-- silently, aloud, together, alone,
in groups and in pairs as often as possible. My question always was, "How
can they learn to read if they don't read?" I decided to make a career
change for more money and less boredom, but fortunately I had a wonderful
principal who talked me into taking a leave of absence and taking a few
courses. I did...and selected library media. The rest is history. I
became certified and went on to get my masters in Ed Media. I have never
once been bored in my 13 years at this job. Where else can you produce a
morning TV show, charm Kindergartners with a puppet performance, assist
students with internet research and punch down wires for the school
computer network--all in the same day!
