Carrollton-Farmers Branch has a vacancy for media specialists at the
elementary level and at the middle school level. We are looking for
strong teachers who also happen to have certification as library media
specialists.

C-FB ISD is a suburban school district with 30 campuses, 22,000
students, 1,500 professional staff. Each media center has at least part
time clerical assistance (1/2 time at middle; 1/4 time at elem.),
satellite dish, cable connection. The interim library management system
is Graphical Galaxy. New Pentium workstations (elem-8; ms-12; hs-18)
provide OPAC, Intenet access, and MS Office applications; the
circulation CPU acts as a CD-ROM tower server. The district is operating
on a new NT network, which provides a work/presentation station for each
teacher. We are a new member of Texas Library Connection; we used
Netscape 3.0 to access the Internet. Elementary schools are on flexible
schedules. Working together the Staff Development and Technology
Departments (library services is a part of the TD) support technology
initiatives. The District Media Center offers training in a wide
variety of hardware technologies and software also. Salaries and
benefits are comparable to other large school districts in the metroplex
area.

Initiatives for 1997-1999 include assessment of program effectiveness,
implementation of Big 6 strategies, land possible migration to a true
Web-based OPAC. A new middle school opens August 1997, along with
another middle school and high a school in August 1998.

Subject: TECH: CD-ROM Towers

I am interested in hearing from librarians who have looked into the
purchase of CD-ROM
towers. What are the things you should know before purchasing a tower?
Advantages or
disadvantges to networking the CDs in this manner. If you have purchased
a tower are you
happy? Why or why not?
