Gen: Know this book title? Help!

I am trying to remember an adult author.  I have read two of her novels

1. published after 94, tells story of divorcee with deaf son who moves to
ranch and relationship with a salt of the earth cowboy who killed someone
in a bar years ago

2. older book, tells of a college prof who falls in love with a cowgirl
who trains horses near a city.  She sues the police as part of the plot.

Read these a few years ago, but author and title are blanks.  Tried
subject searches for deaf fiction and horsemanship fiction in our regional
db, but struck out.  Author is a woman.
