Thanks to all of you responding to my request for buying encyclopedias at a
discount.

Several publishers were mentioned, and fall is appently the time to buy. Among them
were:
World Book
New Book of Knowledge
Compton's
Grolier (Academic American, New Book of Knowledge, Americana)
Britannica
Collier's

Dennis Jones said he got a New Book of Knowledge for $299. Linda Slacum said she
had gotten a
few sets of year old Compton's for $100 each through a sales rep. Donna Curtis said
prices
tended to be about $200 less than just-off-the-press versions. She said Grolier
sends flyers
out around Oct/Nov. Helen Taylor and Jennifer Lyons metioned a read-a-thon by World
Book.
From Jennifer Lyons:

"I have bought year old materials from World Book and Grolier. Your
representative should be able to help you. May I also tell you about the
World Book Partners in Excellence program. It uses a readathon format to
raise funds for libraries. World book then sells their products at 33%
off. We raised $950 and got many CD-ROM and print products."

Many folks suggested Encyclopedias on CD. We have a few already, and I am sure to
get some
more, but there are still some advantages to having print versions as well. Some
companies
may be offering print/CD combos. John Lees suggested we consider www access. We
will.

No one gave me names and phone numbers, though I am sure I can find them easily
enough. If I
get any addtional info, I will post another hit.

Thanks again.
