Governor and Mrs. Bush have been and continue to be very strong supporters of libraries and reading. There support is wide spread and varied. They have lent their names and time to events such as young writers conferences, library grand openings, school reading/library programs; they have demonstrated their committment to reading by giving their daughters books for Valentine's Day and other holidays; Mrs. Bush helped with the development of the first Texas Book Festival which raised money for books for public libraries (2nd Festival is November 1 and 2, 1997 in Austin); Governor Bush signs the certificates given to children as part of the Texas Reading Club (a program that provides reading club promotional materials to libraries at no cost to them, sponsored by the Texas State Library); Governor Bush announced his committment to improving children's reading skills at the beginning of his term of office (before it became a national cause). These are just a few of the ways Gov. and Mrs. Bush have helped promote libraries and reading.
