I had asked if one could access AOL mail (from a personal home account) at school using Netscape or Eudora. Alas. The answer is no. The AOL mail server will respond to only AOL software. I got at least 20 quick, helpful answers and a few "I'd like to know that, too"'s. I'm sharing just a couple of posts, as the info provided was the same. Many thanks, helpful people! Our resident humorist Alice wrote me, "You can install AOL software on any machine (though I'd do it on only one -- and not one the students can access), and then teachers can go to the "sign on" screen, select screen name as GUEST, put in their own name, and thus access their mail." Sharron McElmeel clarified it further: "However it takes just a few mb to load AOL on any machine so if you have someone who wishes to do that regularly I would load the AOL software (without the browser -- as that is what takes the space) and configure it to go through your server/modem connection (if you are a direct wiring use the tcp/ip selection instead of selecting a modem). Then each time someone wants to check they sign on as "guest" and proceed. As a guest however they will not be able to do a "flash" session and read offline they will need to go into their mail and select which messages they wish to open and read (while on line)." Just a note: I got at leat 3 replies from voices of experience saying that giving students access to their AOL mail can become a problem. Better to have AOL access for teachers only.
