I teach my students to check for themselves by clicking their library card
and looking at the screen.
Even kindergartners (provided that they can reach their little heads to the
counter level) are able to do this for themselves.  No, the age of the
pupil certainly DOES NOT MATTER!   Older students are often very, very
forgetful.
