PUNISHED BY REWARDS: WHAT MOTIVATES KIDS TO READ A symposium sponsored by Texas Womans University School of Library and Information Science and the Texas State Library Alfie Kohn, author of Punished by Rewards: The Trouble with Gold Stars, Incentive Plans, As, Praise, and Other Bribes will be the featured speaker at a day-long symposium on motivating readers at Texas Womans University in Denton, TX on Monday, July 28, 1997. Librarians, teachers, and other participants will be offered strategies for reading motivation that encourage children to read without creating incentive programs that may ultimately devalue the process of reading. Additional speakers will include national and locally known librarians, publishers, authors, and professors who will conduct break-out sessions on ways to encourage reading and motivate readers. The fee for the full-day symposium is $30 (box lunches available at additional cost). For information or to register contact: Betty Carter, TWU SLIS, SH411, Box 425438, TWU Station, Denton, TX 76204 (email: f_carter@twu.edu) or telephone 817-898-2616.
