GEN: Sleuthing Short Story Title

Hello,

Our alternative school teacher is trying to remember the title of a short
story he read in high school.  Doesn't know author either. He thinks the
plot is something like this:
It's about some explorers who discover a valley in which all people are
blind.  The people have no vocabulary for seeing and think the explorers
are crazy as they describe colors and what they see.  Their other senses
are highly developed naturally and they recognize people by nuances of
sound.  It ends with one of the explorers falling in love and staying and
giving up seeing.  Also an explorer is killed.

If anyone can identify the title he'll be mega-impressed!!
