Face card symbolism

My senior English teacher just came in with a request for information on
the symbolism on the face cards in a regular deck of playing cards.  They
just read "The Rape of the Lock"  and it has started a whole discussion
about playing cards!  In addition, the class wants to know how to play the
card game in the play--Ombre (that is, if it really exists!).
