General: Switching from school libraries to academic

In a few years I will be looking at possible retirement from my school
system.  I am wondering what it would be like to work in a college
library--we have several small colleges in our area and am wondering
what I would need to start doing to prepare myself.  If anyone has done
this or knows someone who has any advice, I would appreciate hearing
