Tech: Upgrades for 386 PC's and Compaq Presario CDS 526

Does anyone have tried and true methods for upgrading hard drives and RAM in
these computers.  We have also heard rumors about adding Intel pentium chips
to school computers to upgrade them.  What are Intel's requirements for the
original hardware, and are these chips offered free?  If so, how did you get
them?
