Tech: Converting card catalog to computer

I'm about to begin the process of automating after weeding extensively.
To save money (not my sanity though) I will be typing in the card catalog
info to convert to MARC records using Companion's SmartMarc.  My question
is:  Am I better off using my shelf list drawers which are "fairly
current" or pulling the books off the shelf?  Any suggetions would be
appreciated.  Thank you.
