I think it would be terrific if school library media people and others interested in promoting information literacy would participate in this town meeting. Secretary Riley and others need to hear - how important it is for a broad definition of literacy to be promoted - how information literacy - with the Big Six as an example, of course ;-) is exactly what is needed - how information literacy is the key to using technology in meaningful ways - how school library media specialists are essential individuals in making all this happen. Mike =================================== Subject: Reading Together & Ready to Learn: Town Meetings HOW CAN FAMILIES, SCHOOLS & COMMUNITIES CAN WORK TOGETHER to make sure young children develop the skills & knowledge for success in school & in life? That's the focus of two upcoming Satellite Town Meetings. On May 20, "Reading Together: Families, Schools & Communities" will explore innovative ideas for summer reading programs involving libraries, schools, businesses & other community institutions. Secretary Riley will welcome a panel of parents, educators, business & community leaders from around the country who have organized quality community-wide summer reading programs for children. Broadcast live from the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., the program will also feature the Read*Write*Now! summer reading program sponsored by the Partnership for Family Involvement in Education. Tuesday, May 20, 1997, 8:00 - 9:00 p.m. (Eastern time) On June 17, "Ready to Learn: Preparing Young Children for School Success" will look at the importance of health & nutrition, how communities can support parents as their children's first & most important teachers, and ways to establish high-quality child care & preschool programs. Secretary Riley will host this discussion with parents, educators, business & community leaders who will suggest ways of ensuring that every young child has the opportunity to succeed in school. The latest research on brain development & early learning will also be part of the discussion. Tuesday, June 17, 1997, 8:00 - 9:00 p.m. (Eastern time) Join the discussion! The Satellite Town Meeting is available at no cost. We ask only that you register your participation. (See below.) Our information specialists can tell you if another group in your community has already registered & help answer your questions on how to create your own local meeting in coordination with the Satellite Town Meeting. ********************************* How You Can Join the Town Meeting ********************************* You can participate in the Satellite Town Meeting by calling during the live teleconference & asking your question of the Secretary & his guests. To find out if the Town Meeting is being broadcast regularly, you may want to call your local cable access station. If not, you might ask them to broadcast the program. Many cable access stations are willing to broadcast free programs like this if requested by a community member. It is also possible to organize your own downlink site on the evening of the program. Local PBS member stations, schools, community colleges & universities, and cable access stations are often willing to serve as downlink sites.
