I think it would be terrific if school library media people and others
interested in promoting information literacy would participate in this
town meeting. Secretary Riley and others need to hear

- how important it is for a broad definition of literacy to be promoted

- how information literacy - with the Big Six as an example, of course ;-)
is exactly what is needed

- how information literacy is the key to using technology in meaningful
ways

- how school library media specialists are essential individuals in making
all this happen.

So, consider getting involved! We can make a difference.

Mike

HOW CAN FAMILIES, SCHOOLS & COMMUNITIES CAN WORK TOGETHER to make
sure young children develop the skills & knowledge for success
      in school & in life?

That's the focus of two upcoming Satellite Town Meetings.

On May 20, "Reading Together: Families, Schools & Communities"
will explore innovative ideas for summer reading programs
involving libraries, schools, businesses & other community
institutions. Secretary Riley will welcome a panel of
parents, educators, business & community leaders from around
the country who have organized quality community-wide summer
reading programs for children. Broadcast live from the

On June 17, "Ready to Learn: Preparing Young Children for
School Success" will look at the importance of health &
nutrition, how communities can support parents as their
children's first & most important teachers, and ways to
establish high-quality child care & preschool programs.
Secretary Riley will host this discussion with parents,
educators, business & community leaders who will suggest ways
of ensuring that every young child has the opportunity to
succeed in school. The latest research on brain development &
early learning will also be part of the discussion.
