I use large envelopes (without clasps) on which I put a barcode in the
bottom left corner and then laminate. I then scotch tape something to
take the place of the old date due slips in the lower right corner.
When a magazine is checked out, this temporary barcode is given an
abbreviated title with the issue date - such as: RR (for Ranger Rick),
or SK (Sports Illus. for Kids) 3/96. The envelope is stamped with the
date due, and the magazine is placed inside. Children are instructed to
keep the magazine in the envelope at all times when not in use, as I
can't check in the magazine without its envelope.

This works very well. We only have trouble with about 2 magazines a
year. The use of 2-letter abbreviations with the mag. date is very
quick. Date dues can be stamped on envelopes ahead of time, which keeps
the process quick as well.
