The high school library(950 students) is connected to the Internet(7 terminals). The district chose NOT to install any "filtering" program and parental permission forms were sent out. Unfortunately, over 60% of the parents said "NO" or failed to return the "access use" form which they know also means no. From the librarian's perspective pertaining to reference and research, I now have a 'NET" class of students and a "NETLESS" group which is the majority. QUESTIONS: 1. Since the students of any particular class have the same assignment requirements, the "NETLESS" students are at a research disadvantage. How does the librarian address and alleviate this "research opportunity inequality" dilemma? 2. Although I'm aware of the opposition and criticism of "filters" or "blocking' programs, if their installation would reduce the "NETLESS" students by a substantial percent, would it be worth the trade off?
