I don't think I'm being naive when I say this isn't a new situation.
When one walked into a library circa 1910, there were many books on
the shelves, maps, altlases, different reference tools.  All the
information is there--why have a librarian?  Why can't the
students/patrons just "go get" the information for themselves?
Because it would take forever, that's why.  So the librarian is there
to put the materials in a useful order, to train people to access
them with a minimum of fuss, and to assist in making the resources
easily available to those who need them.

So now, there are a new variety of resources, but I see the role of
librarian as just the same.  Only the formats have been changed.
