A summary of replies to my request for information about how search engines
"search" follows.   I have not tried all of the sites.        Edith LaForge

1.  The Dec. 3, 1996 issue of PC Magazine has an excellent section on

help in selecting which of many SE to use.  For more advanced users

created by an academic librarian Scott Nicholson and have info. on how
search engines work, a tutorial, and explanations.

provides explanations on how the engines work, ways to use them most
effectively, and ranks them.

5.  An instructor at Red River Community College in Winnipeg, Manitoba,
Canada has a great site which lists comparisons of SE, and gives info. on
how each works, which is the best for what you want to do.    It's called
"Doing Research on the Web" and is at

8.  Might look for the book _The Neal-Schuman Authoritative Guide to Search
Engines_; it looks at the 7 leading search engines, describes how each
works, and evaluates performance for different kinds of searchs.  There's a
