May excellent ideas: Try any story from Patricia McKissack's the Dark Thirty; or Five Untold Tales by Brooks (I believe) - -they are fractured fairy tales with twisted endings when compared to the originals. Also try some of the poetry by Jeff Moss (a delightful new poet that kids will love as much as Silverstein or Prelutsky). Also the first chapter of "Sideways School is Falling Down" by Louis Sachar Lots mentioned Chris Crutcher's Athletic Shorts. I agree. We were fortunate to have Chris at our middle schools last year for two days, and it changed us. What a wonderful experience. Unreal, Unbearable - similar titles by Jennings - with special mention of "Without a Shirt" from Unreal Short Stories by Hersey Tales form Gold Mountain by Yep Birthday Surprise by Hurwitz and Chapters from All About Sam by Lowrey. I have chosen a few - There with be one by Steinbeck, Mark Twain, one from an Asimov collection, a memior from Winston Churchill, & Crutcher. I will find these others over the next few days and make 5 more choices. Thanks to everyone who answered. As always, this is such a helpful group.
