The Book Selection Committee for the third annual Book Bowl
(formerly known as Battle of the Books) in New Haven, CT is in need of
recommendations for high interest, multicultural (especially black,
Hispanic, and Asian-American) titles for readers in grades 6, 7 and 8.
Titles used previously are Mama, I Want to Sing (Higginson), Darnell Rock
Reporting (Myers), The Captive (Joyce Hansen) Just Like Martin (Ossie
Davis), Finding Buck McHenry (Slote), Cousins (Hamilton). The final list
of ten must represent a variety of genres, reading levels, and diversity.
High interest is a requirement as well.
Many thanks.

Subject: HIT: MID 8th grade novel

Thanks a bunch for the HUGE response to my query. I have not sent
personal notes of thanks, but if you responded to my request, consider
yourself "cyber-hugged!"

Oh, and I'm not posting names of contributors, only because I don't know
what you all ever decided to do about that whole issue.

BTW, If I get an author's name wrong, please don't flame me...I'm posting
what was given to me.

By far the most popular suggestion was

"The Watsons go to Birmingham...1966" by Curtis.

Followed by: Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry (Taylor)
                Nightjohn (Paulsen)
                The Slave Dancer (Fox)
                I, Juan de Pareja (Trevino)
My Name is Not Angelica (O'Dell)
                A Girl Named Disaster (Farmer)
                Yolonda's Genius (?)
                Sounder (Taylor)
                Somewhere in the Darkness (?)
                Hoops (Myers)
...and ANYTHING by Virginia Hamilton or Walter Dean Myers.

Again, THANKS!!!!!
Marcia
