UMAX scanner help needed

So many people wrote that they loved their VistaScan by UMAX because it is
so easy to use.  Well, I'm having trouble, and the online help manual
doesn't help.  What happens is this: when I prescan an image it looks
great, but when I scan it, the color changes to all pinks and white.
Anyone have an idea what I am doing wrong?  I am trying to scan in book
covers (actually they are paperback books, covered with contact paper--is
that the problem?) Any suggestions would be so helpful. Thanks in advance.
