Unfortunately, that makes a mush of the etymology of "ampersand," a conflation of "and per se and" (they talked funny in those days <grin>). Anyway, "the 'at' sign" is more meaningful and takes fewer syllables than "the ampersat." But it is about time this whole thread about the "at" sign be @ an end ...
