Much as I agree with Gary's perceptive comments and action plan, I must disagree in part...Time IS to blame, they wrote and published the article. They are "to blame" in the larger sense that they are a national publication, one that is read by many, and one that DOES have a role in shaping public opinion. Of course, the idea of influencing local people close to home about the importance of libraries should never be overlooked or given short shrift; but when a national publication overlooks us, can we doubt that that will have an impact at the local level? Do we doubt that it reflects a national point of view? By targeting Time for our responses, we influence them (remember, they wrote the article) but we also have the chance of a national audience. Gary's points are well taken, but I for one am not willing to let Time off the hook so easily! My nickel's worth!
